NOTICE: GRANDPARENTING PROVISION
Subsection 11(1) of The Social Work Profession Act, otherwise known as the “Grandparenting” provision, has provided an opportunity for practitioners without a social work degree who have been functioning in the role of a social worker for at least 4400 hours in the previous 5 years to be considered for registration as a Social Worker with the Manitoba College of Social Workers. The “Grandparenting” route of entry is time limited and expires on April 3, 2018. All Grandparenting applications and required supporting documentation must be received by the College on or before April 3, 2018. Applications under this section cannot be accepted after this date.
If you are registered under the Grandparenting provision and currently have a practice limitation on your Certificate of Practice, the deadline to submit a request to expand to your scope of practice is also April 3, 2018. For information regarding requests to expand your scope of practice, click here.
Important reminder: Social Workers registered under the Grandparenting provision must continue to demonstrate that they are currently functioning in the role of a social worker in order to be eligible for renewal of registration [SWPA 11(2)]. If registration is cancelled or allowed to lapse, a practitioner will not be able to reapply as a Grandparented applicant after April 3, 2018.
*After April 3, 2018, practitioners without a social work degree who have been functioning in the role of a social worker safely, competently and ethically for at least 5600 hours within 3 of the previous 5 years may be eligible for registration via the “Substantial Equivalency” route of entry. In addition to verification of employment/volunteer work in a social work role, applicants in this category will be required to demonstrate that they have social work related educational qualifications and theoretical social work knowledge in order to be eligible for registration. Further information regarding the Substantial Equivalency route of entry will be available on the Manitoba College of Social Workers website prior to March 31, 2018.
